Nasal & Sinus Surgical Procedures

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Most severe and advanced sinus disease today is surgically treated “endoscopically”. Prior to the development of the sinus endoscope, the sinuses many times were drained with external incisions in the face or the mouth. Today, endoscopic sinus surgery has virtually eliminated the need to do this.

The sinuses can be drained through the nose and through their natural openings. Patients who have more advanced sinus problems that cannot be treated with Balloon Sinuplasty can be treated by endoscopic surgery. Therefore, there is no need for external cutting. Recovery time is quicker and there is no external facial swelling. Lastly, no packing is placed in the nose allowing the patient to breathe through their nose immediately post operatively.

Septoplasty
This corrective surgical procedure is done to straighten the nasal septum (the partition that separates the right and left nasal passage). A deviated septum can restrict airflow through the nasal cavities causing chronic congestion, mouth breathing, difficulty exercising, disruption of breathing during sleep, headache, sinus pressure and nasal bleeding.

Septoplasty surgery is performed entirely through the nostrils; accordingly, no bruising or external signs occur. The surgery may be combined with a Rhinoplasty, in which case the external appearance of the nose is altered and swelling/bruising of the face is evident. Septoplasty may also be combined with sinus surgery.

Turbinate Surgery
Sometimes chronic nasal congestion from allergies or from environmental irritations no longer responds to medications. That is the time to consider turbinate surgery.

Turbinate surgery can be performed in the office or in the operating room (in conjunction with other nasal or sinus surgery), and permanently reduces nasal congestion. After this procedure nasal breathing is improved and nasal drainage is reduced or eliminated. This decreases the need for one to have to constantly blow their nose. Lastly, medication usage is decreased or eliminated.
